Fact and Opinion

Facts are pieces of information that can be discovered

Opinions are something you think or believe. An opinion can not be proven

Curriculum At -A- Glance

This week in reading we are working on comprehension. Together we want to work as a team to work to strengthen the way students understand text. The first step is for students to be able to tell the difference between fact and opinion in a non-fiction text. We will be working in class practicing what fact is and what an opinion is. A fact is true and can be proven from evidence. An opinion is a person's own belief or thought on a topic.

Practice fact and opinion at home!
Each night a book from class will be sent home. Using the book pick out phrases from the story and ask your student if the statement is fact or opinion and how they know. Another simple way of practicing this is by simply having a conversation for 3 to 5 minutes, then have the students pick out the facts and the opinions. Students could also read a favorite magazine, book, or newspaper article. Before reading make sure to have an orange and yellow writing utensil. Orange will stand for facts and yellow will stand for opinions. Read through once. Then the second time through have the students highlight all of the facts in yellow and all of the opinions in orange. The students have been practicing this in class.

Nightly Reading
Please read one chapter per night of your chapter book from your Book Club in class. Be sure to use sticky notes and list at least 2 facts and 2 opinions from the chapter you read.

The links below take you to games that will provide additional practice! The games are a fun way to reinforce learning!
